Gregor Mendel and the History of Heredity

چکیده
Gregor Mendel’s paper “Experiments on Plant Hybrids” (1866) has become a paradigmatic case in the historiography of life sciences because production and reception “discovery” sharply fell apart, thus raising fundamental questions about relationship between scientific achievement “its” time. In this chapter, I am providing an overview answers that have been given to these by various historians. first section, cover commentators who claimed Mendel was “ahead” his time, contemporaries failed recognize achievement. then move scholars scientists argued against position, claiming not anticipating twentieth-century genetics, but fact representative older research tradition. last step, turn more recent cultural history heredity according which embedded local culture combined variety advanced traditional strands nineteenth-century life-sciences. Overall, arguing one should overestimate coherence dominance presumed “paradigms,” “epistemes” or “styles” biology.

Genes and genius: the inheritance of Gregor Mendel.
655 Gregor Mendel. Does the name stir anything now, after 140 years? Perhaps we acknowledge a remote debt. “The Father of Genetics.” Honorific, but also rather automatic, taken for granted. A pioneer, a founder—but, as such, a character from a mythic realm. We probably recall something about what he did. Crossbred peas. Recorded variations. Identified dominant and recessive traits. But can such...
متن کاملExperiments on Plant Hybrids by Gregor Mendel
Here, translated into English, GENETICS republishes the original Mendel article. As discussed in the Perspectives by Daniel J. Fairbanks and Scott Abbott this translation differs from others in an attempt to be both more accurate than previous translations and also more accessible. GENETICS wishes to thank Scott Abbott and Daniel J. Fairbanks for their labors in presenting the scientific commun...
متن کاملGregor Mendel, OSA (1822-1884), founder of scientific genetics.
Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian monk and part-time school teacher, undertook a series of brilliant hybridisation experiments with garden peas between 1857 and 1864 in the monastery gardens and, using statistical methods for the first time in biology, established the laws of heredity, thereby establishing the discipline of genetics.

Gregor Mendel (18221884) is now generally acknowledged as the founder of modern genetics. He was among the first to make systematic use of mathematical methods in biology, employing just the simpler rules of probability theory to work out some of the...
متن کامل"Experiments in Plant Hybridization" (1866), by Johann Gregor Mendel
During the mid-nineteenth century, Johann Gregor Mendel experimented with pea plants to develop a theory of inheritance. In 1843, while a monk in the Augustian St Thomas?s Abbey in Brünn, Austria, now Brno, Czech Repubic, Mendel examined the physical appearance of the abbey?s pea plants ( Pisum sativum [4]) and noted inconsistencies between what he saw and what the blending theory of inheritanc...
